Navigating digital worlds: a scoping review of skills and strategies for enhancing digital resilience among higher education students on social media platforms

In the evolving landscape of digital education, fostering digital resilience among students navigating social media platforms has become crucial. This scoping review, guided by the revised Arksey and O’Malley protocol, aims to identify and evaluate strategies employed by students to develop digital resilience within educational contexts on social media platforms. Our comprehensive review identified four main skills—Personal, Cognitive, Emotional, and Social—encompassing ten subskills crucial for navigating online challenges effectively. These include Privacy and Protection, Time Management, Information Processing, Critical Thinking, Positive Mindset, Stress Management, Self-Awareness, Emotional Regulation, Communication and Support, and Problem-Solving and Decision-Making. Furthermore, we delineated four primary strategies—Cognitive Strategies, Metacognitive Strategies, Behavioral Strategies, and Technology-Enhanced Skills—and seven sub-strategies, including Information Literacy, Attention and Focus, Goal Setting, Seeking Help and Support, Privacy and Security, Cyberbullying Prevention, and Digital Citizenship. Additionally, our review highlights four main institutional strategies—Curriculum Integration, Supportive Policies, Collaboration, and Well-Being Programs—underscoring the role of educational institutions in promoting a supportive environment for developing digital resilience. This comprehensive framework, comprising skills, individual strategies, and institutional strategies, offers a multifaceted approach to equip students with the necessary competencies for navigating and thriving in digital spaces, particularly on social media platforms within educational contexts.
