Unicaf University Welcomes New Vice-Chancellor with Public Lecture on the Future of Education
Unicaf University, Zambia officially welcomed its new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Donald Chungu, at a special Meet the New Vice-Chancellor event held on Friday, 18 September 2026. The event brought together university representatives, academics, stakeholders and guests for an afternoon of engagement, dialogue and networking centred on the future of education in Africa.
The event commenced with the Master of Ceremonies, Ms Abigail Chalwe Nachilima, welcoming guests and outlining the programme for the afternoon. The Chancellor, Professor Mpazi Sinjela, subsequently introduced Professor Chungu and invited him to deliver his inaugural public lecture as Vice Chancellor.
Under the theme “The Future of Education in Africa”, Professor Chungu’s lecture explored the role of higher education in supporting Africa’s development agenda and preparing graduates to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world.
The lecture examined the opportunities and approaches that can contribute to the advancement of education across the continent, while highlighting the need for universities to equip graduates with the knowledge, skills and adaptability required to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s social and economic development.
Following the lecture, guests took part in an engaging question-and-answer session, providing an opportunity to exchange views directly with the Vice-Chancellor and other university representatives. The discussion further encouraged dialogue around the evolving role of universities and the priorities that should shape higher education in Africa.
The formal programme concluded with closing remarks from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academics, Dr Daniel L. Mpolomoka, after which guests moved to the lobby for a cocktail reception.
The reception provided an informal setting for continued discussions, networking and interaction with Professor Chungu and members of the University’s leadership team.
The event marked an important occasion for Unicaf University as it welcomed its new Vice-Chancellor and provided a platform for meaningful dialogue on the future of higher education in Africa. Through initiatives such as public lectures and stakeholder engagement, the University continues to create opportunities for discussion around the challenges and opportunities shaping education and its contribution to Africa’s development.
Professor Chungu’s appointment comes at a time when higher education institutions across Africa are increasingly called upon to respond to technological, economic and social change while ensuring that graduates are prepared to make a meaningful contribution to their communities and the wider continent.
