This research explored academic staff professional development opportunities (ASPDOs) in Rwanda’s Private Higher Learning Institutions (PHLIs), focusing on their role in improving instructional excellence and optimise student academic achievements. The study examined how professional development (PD) functions as a pivotal mechanism and a strategic tool for PHLIs to adapt to evolving educational demands, enhance accountability, and ensure effective teaching and learning. Specifically, it aimed to identify available academic staff professional development opportunities, assess their effectiveness and relevance, analyse their role in academic staff (AS) career growth, and assess the influence of pedagogical effectiveness on learners’ academic performance. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, integrating qualitative insights derived from semi-structured interviews (SSIs) with senior academic administrators and quantitative findings obtained through structured questionnaires distributed to academic staff. Purposive sampling was employed to identify and recruit senior leaders, while convenience sampling targeted academic staff. This comprehensive approach provided insights from both leadership and teaching staff perspectives. Findings revealed a range of academic staff professional development opportunities, including international collaborations and locally organised workshops, showcasing efforts to foster professional growth. Participants reported that these opportunities effectively enhanced their skills, knowledge, and teaching practices, supporting career advancement and institutional improvement. Despite these benefits, challenges such as limited funding and the perceived scarcity of programmes in some institutions were highlighted. The study emphasised the transformative potential of professional development as a catalyst for academic staff career growth, improved teaching quality, and institutional progress. To address existing challenges, it recommended increased collaboration with key external entities including industry affiliates, NGOs, and government systems to secure funding and expand access to academic staff professional development opportunities. Additionally, it called for exploring diverse funding sources and adopting cost-effective strategies to sustain professional development programmes. By highlighting the significant role of structured professional growth initiatives for academic personnel in elevating pedagogical excellence and institutional efficacy, this study contributes to understanding their critical role in enhancing private higher education in Rwanda and offers practical solutions to improve their accessibility and impact.
